Why are Gov. Abbott and TCEQ repeating a mistake and suspending regulations after Imelda?
Since Imelda has already caused at least 100,000 more pounds of air pollution to be released, it's clear that "Gov. Greg Abbott could risk the health of thousands of Texans if he repeats the mistake that he made by waiting seven months to reinstate environmental regulations suspended after Hurricane Harvey flooded the state two years ago," writes the editorial board of the Houston Chronicle.
More than 100 toxic releases were reported to be have been related to Harvey, as the Chronicle reported.
Environment Texas executive director Luke Metzger says, "Many of the suspended rules have nothing to do with disaster recovery but are critically important to protect communities and hold industry accountable ... . Waiving environmental protections gives companies a blank check to pollute our air, water and land."
